This symposium will discuss proper terminology and social norms for treating patients who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. We will further discuss gender-affirming surgery and the colorectal surgeon's role in caring for transgender patients. We will review considerations for LGBTQ+ patient perioperative care and the role of the colorectal surgeon in caring for gay men.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Recognize the correct terminology and identify social norms when treating members of the sexual and gender minority community.
  • Identify the role of the colorectal surgeon in treating these patients, including pitfalls and potential complications.
  • Improve care delivery during and after surgery.
