This symposium will cover new approaches and strategies for the management of an age-old disease, diverticulitis. We often read and hear that Hartmann's procedure for perforated diverticulitis is obsolete, however, when it comes to everyday practice, Hartmann's procedure is still the most common emergent operation for diverticulitis. This symposium will cover how we can appropriately select patients and cases to shift our practices and will introduce new approaches to establishing gastrointestinal restoration in perforated diverticulitis. Also, new medical approaches for symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease and recurrent diverticulitis will be covered. Experts in decision-making and decision regret will share how our patients feel about diverticulitis care and how we can improve the integration of the patient perspective to better serve our patients. Finally, the association between obesity and diverticulitis outcomes will be explained, and the case for the management of obesity before diverticulitis treatment will be discussed.
