eP742 - I Do My Own Stents

Purpose/Background: The purpose of this project is to educate other surgeons on our institutional pathway for colon and rectal surgeons to become credentialed to perform their own cystoscopy with ureteral ICG installation and catheterization. Credentialing is hospital/health system specific. Our health system, like many community hospitals, does not always have urology coverage available to assist with ureteral stenting or ICG instillation. Many hospitals would consider cystoscopy with ureteral stenting outside the scope of the colon and rectal and general surgeons despite allowing advance practice providers to perform these procedures independently.Methods/Interventions: Working with our hospital credentialing board, enterprise credentialing committee, and staff urologists we developed a pathway to allow our colon and rectal surgeons to become credentialed in cystoscopy with ureteral ICG installation and ureteral catheterization. Our pathway included colon and rectal surgeon observation of urology performed cystoscopy and ureteral stent placement, then urology proctored cystoscopy and ureteral stenting. Additionally, colon and rectal surgeons attended a procedural workshop hosted by the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates to obtain further hands on training and education designed for non-Urologist healthcare providers. At the end of the workshop participants were given a certificate of completion which was included in the hospital credentialing application.We then analyzed time from patient in room to start of colon/rectal procedure before and after intervention (urology vs colorectal surgeon).Results/Outcomes: Colon and Rectal surgeons participating in this pathway were able to demonstrate competency and become credentialed to perform cystoscopy and ureteral ICG installation and stenting/catheters on their own colon and rectal procedures.We found time from patient in room to start of colorectal procedure was less when cystoscopy and ureteral stenting was performed by the single colorectal surgery service compared to the combination/coordination of urology and colorectal surgery services.Conclusion/

Discussion: Colon and rectal surgeons can become competent and credentialed at performing cystoscopy and ureteral stenting and ICG installation as part of their colorectal procedures. Doing this procedure themselves, our colorectal surgeons saved time in the operating room.
