Purpose/Background: Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most common neoplasms worldwide and represents a significant burden on healthcare systems. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a disruption in medical care, leading to delays in the diagnosis and treatment of non-virus-related diseases. In Mexico, CRC is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in men and the fourth in women. It is important to understand the impact of the health emergency on the care of CRC patients and to analyze the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes once hospital care has been normalized. This study had the aim to describe the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes in CRC patients at a tertiary-level hospital in Mexico after hospital care was normalized following the COVID-19 health emergency.Methods/Interventions: We included 109 consecutive patients with CRC who were treated at the Coloproctology Service of the "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga" General Hospital in Mexico and underwent surgery between April 2022 and March 2023. Demographic data, comorbidities, tumor location, clinical stage, surgical treatment, and postoperative complications were collected. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26, employing descriptive statistics to obtain measures of central tendency and frequency distribution. This allowed for a detailed understanding of the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes in this patient sample.Results/Outcomes: Among the patients included in the study, 55 patients were male (50.5%), and 54 patients were female (49.5%). The mean age of the patients was 58 ± 12.49 years. During the study period, a significant increase in the number of patients in advanced stages of the disease was observed, possibly due to a decrease in COVID-19 cases and increased hospital care availability. The most common tumor location was the rectum (53.2%), followed by the left colon (22.9%). Most patients were in clinical stage IV (46.8%). Low anterior resection was the most common surgical procedure (12.8%). Postoperative complications were observed in 13.2% of the patients (Table 1).Conclusion/

Discussion: This study underscores the importance of early detection and timely access to medical care for patients with colorectal cancer. Following the normalization of hospital care after the COVID-19 health emergency, an increase in patients at advanced stages of the disease was observed. It is crucial to strengthen care protocols, implement strategies for prevention and early diagnosis, and establish long-term follow-up programs. This will improve surgical outcomes, reduce complications, and save lives. In times of a health crisis, continuous and quality medical care for colorectal cancer patients must be ensured.Table 1.
