Purpose/Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Venous thromboembolisms (VTEs) are a well-reported complication of IBD. Operative management in IBD patients is common, with some reports estimating 20% of UC patients and 80% of Crohn’s disease patients undergo surgery. VTEs are one of the most common causes of preventable death in all surgical patients. Currently, there is little literature investigating the risk of VTEs in IBD patients in a surgical setting, including the re-admission rates for VTE in this population.Methods/Interventions: The ACS NSQIP Colectomy-Targeted dataset was used to identify patients who underwent colectomy from 2015-2021. Patients were stratified by indication for surgery. Those with unspecified surgical indications or surgery for malignancy were excluded. Patients undergoing surgery for IBD were compared to those with other surgical indications. Rates of readmission for VTE were assessed using chi-square analysis and binomial logistic regression.Results/Outcomes: 114,836 patients (54% female) were analyzed, including 22,159 (19%) who underwent surgery for IBD. The overall rate of readmission for VTE was 0.4%. IBD was associated with higher rates of readmission for VTE (0.5% vs 0.3%, p < 0.001). In a binomial logistic regression model controlling for age, gender, surgical urgency, prolonged hospitalization, perioperative transfusion of blood products, and smoking status, IBD was an independent risk factor for VTE-related readmission (OR 1.34 95% CI 1.03-1.73, p=0.029).Conclusion/

Discussion: IBD is an independent risk factor for thromboembolic complications following colectomy, most notably readmission for VTE. Further data is needed to determine if IBD patients are receiving the appropriate VTE prophylaxis peri- and post-operatively.
