This symposium will discuss proper terminology and social norms for treating patients who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. We will further discuss gender-affirming surgery and the colorectal surgeon's role in caring for transgender patients. We will review considerations for LGBTQ+ patient perioperative care and the role of the colorectal surgeon in caring for gay men.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Recognize the correct terminology and identify social norms when treating members of the sexual and gender minority community.
Identify the role of the colorectal surgeon in treating these patients, including pitfalls and potential complications.
Improve care delivery during and after surgery.
