Dr. Amir Bastawrous has been active in undergraduate and graduate medical education for more than 20 years. Over the years he has served as Program Director for 3 different Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowships. Under his leadership each program underwent expansion and extensive restructuring with a focus on organized and directed education, progressive independence of the learner, and objective assessment of skill acquisition.
Dr. Bastawrous obtained his BA and MD degrees from the University of Chicago in 1988 and 1992, respectively. He completed his General Surgery training and a basic science research fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 2000 and his Colon and Rectal Surgery training at the Cook County/University of Illinois Program in Chicago in 2001. He completed his MBA in 2009 at the Liautaud Graduate School of Business at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the Medical Director for Academic Affairs and DIO for Swedish Health System. He is also faculty in the Swedish Colon and Rectal Fellowships in Seattle, Washington. He is a recognized national leader in robotic colon and rectal surgery and has particular interest in robotics training. During his career he has authored dozens of papers in peer reviewed journals and continues to be active in producing scholarly works.
