Thomas E. Read, MD, FACS, FASCRS serves as Cracchiolo Family Professor and Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He received his B.A. from Harvard University and M.D. from the University of California San Francisco, where he completed residency in general surgery and basic science research fellowship. Dr. Read completed residency in colon and rectal surgery at Lahey Clinic. Dr. Read maintains a busy clinical practice, focusing on complex abdominopelvic disease. Dr. Read’s research interests have focused on preventing and treating colorectal cancer, improving outcomes following colectomy, and using minimally invasive techniques to manage colorectal disease. He has a keen interest in education and has served as Coursemaster for medical student education at two institutions and Program Director for two colon and rectal surgery residencies. Dr. Read enjoys editorial work and has served as the Colorectal Associate Editor for Annals of Surgery, Co-Editor of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Editor-in-Chief of Seminars in Colon and Rectal Surgery, and Co-Editor of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr. Read has served in a variety of leadership roles for organizations that represent his specialty, including as President of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, President of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Governor to the American College of Surgeons. He currently serves as Executive Director of the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery.
