Dr. Mika Varma is a Professor of Clinical Surgery and Chief of the Section of Colorectal Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her research has focused on clinical trials for IBD, pelvic floor disorders, and rectal cancer and has also focused on quality of life outcomes after colorectal surgery. She is also part of the perioperative leadership at UCSF as the Surgeon Leader of the MIssion Bay Campus. She is the Co-chair of the Muriel Steele Society, promoting, supporting, and empowering women in surgical specialties at UCSF.
Mika earned her undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University. She completed a residency in general surgery at UCSF and colorectal fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She returned to UCSF in 2000 where she completed a fellowship in Clinical Outcomes Research and Epidemiology and has been on the faculty ever since. She received the UCSF Exceptional Physician award in 2022.
