Surgeons are at the intersection of medical practice and business, where negotiation skills play a pivotal role in patient care, resource allocation, and professional relationships. This round table conversation aims to bring together surgeons of all experience levels to discuss the art and science of negotiation. Participants will explore strategies to navigate complex situations in healthcare, enhance communication skills, and achieve optimal outcomes for patients and institutions. We encourage participants to bring scenarios for discussion with the group. In an open forum, our discussion will include, but not be limited to:
- Optimizing Resource Allocation
- Empowering Surgeons as Advocate
- Optimizing Reimbursement and Compensation
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Explore techniques to negotiate for essential resources within the healthcare system, such as operating room time, equipment, and staffing, to maximize efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • Discuss and promote the role of surgeons as advocates for their patients, equipping them with negotiation skills to secure the best possible care, resources, and treatment options on behalf of their patients within the healthcare system.
  • Discuss techniques for negotiating fair compensation and reimbursement agreements with insurance companies, healthcare payers, and medical institutions, ensuring that surgeons are appropriately compensated for their services while maintaining financial viability for healthcare organizations.
