Dr. Friel graduated from Bowdoin College prior to completing medical school at Harvard University. He completed his general surgery training at the BI-Deaconess Medical Center in 2000 followed by training in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Virginia. He joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in 2001 and has been on staff there ever since. He is currently a Professor of Surgery, the chief of the section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and the General Surgery Program Director.
