Dr. Carlos A. Pellegrini is a native of Argentina who trained in surgery in Rosario, Argentina and at the University of Chicago. From 1979 to 1992 he was a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco where he became Professor of Surgery. In 1993 he moved to Seattle where he took the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington, a position that he held for 23 years. He devoted his clinical efforts to the treatment of diseases of the esophagus and the esophago-gastric junction pioneering the use of minimally invasive techniques. His bibliography, with over 400 publications, is focused on the pathophysiology of the esophagus and the education of surgeons. In 2015 he became the first Chief Medical Officer of UW Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs of the University of Washington. During his practice of academic surgery he served in leadership positions of several professional societies, including ACGME and the American Board of Surgery. In 2005 he was elected President of the American Surgical Association, and in 2013 be was elected President of the American College of Surgeons. In 2018 he graduated from SeattleCoach as an executive coach and joined Marquis Leadership where he works today coaching healthcare leaders. He has been a board member of the Joint Commission since 2015 and is currently the chair of the Board of Commissioners.
