Dr. Debra Holly Ford is Associate Professor of Surgery and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM) in Washington, DC. She is the Chief, Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the founding Medical/Surgical Director of the HU Health Sciences Simulation and Clinical Skills Center. Dr. Ford is a two-time graduate of Howard University receiving her Bachelor and Doctor of Medicine degrees. After graduating from Howard University College of Medicine as the top-ranking medical student, she successfully completed a general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital followed by a residency in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Texas and Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, Texas. Dr. Ford is the first African-American woman to obtain board certification in Colon and Rectal Surgery in the US and the first African-American woman to become a Fellow of ASCRS.
Dr. Ford has been a member of the HUCM faculty since September 1994. She has taught over 2,800 medical students and trained over 150 general surgery residents. She has mentored many students to careers in surgery. She has received many teaching awards and has been recognized for her surgical expertise and clinical work. She is clinically active and her research areas of interest are surgical education and simulation in healthcare. Dr. Ford has been instrumental in developing and supporting simulation in healthcare curricula across the Howard University Health Sciences Enterprise including an intern readiness course to ease the UGME to GME transition. Dr. Ford is a well-respected surgeon and surgical/medical educator whose academic career has focused on educating and mentoring future physicians, surgeons and surgical educators. For recognition of her commitment and contribution to surgical education, Dr. Ford was inducted as a Member of the American College of Surgeons’ Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
