Prof. Morelli received his M.D. degree from University of Pisa in 1999. Beside a formal General Surgery Residency at University of Pisa, he completed a fellowship in surgical interventional ultrasound at the same University. He is a General Surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at University of Pisa and in 2018 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor of Surgery. Currently he is Chief of the General Surgery Unit of the University Hospital of Pisa. In 2014, he became Fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS) and in 2018 Fellow of American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS).
He is member of the following national and international committees: Video Based Education Committee of the American Society of the Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), New Technologies Committee of the American Society of the Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), International Committee of the American Society of the Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), Research Committee of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), Educational Committee of the Italian Society of Colo and Rectal Surgery (SICCR), Executive Member of Clinical Robotic Surgery Association (CRSA).
Since 2015 he has been proctoring on robotic surgery, for several Italian and European surgeons, and he mentored several Fellows and PhD Students.
His surgical experience consists of more than 4500 surgical procedures as first operator including major oncologic surgery (pancreatectomies, hepatectomies, multivisceral resections), organ procurement for transplants (liver, pancreas and kidney), advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery with particular interest for colorectal, HBP, upper GI and urologic (adrenal and kidney’s) surgery.
Since 1999, he has written more than 300 scientific publications on several topics such as Pancreatic cancer, surgical oncology, simulation and training in surgery, transplants, interventional ultrasound, laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
