I am Kenley Unruh, MD, a Colorectal Fellow at Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, Washington. I am currently pursuing both private and academic job opportunities throughout the Western United States, with specific interest in the Pacific Northwest. I am interested in establishing a wide-ranging practice that would include endoscopy, ample clinic time to perform office-based prcedured, and operative block time that would include access to the robotic platform. I believe this variety in my practice would allow me to establish myself as a “Swiss Army Knife” colorectal surgeon in my community, while allowing me to tailor my practice as my skills and interests evolve.
I have also explored multiple aspects of the colorectal landscape through research. Having led multiple projects using the SCOAP database – a multi-center, prospectively gathered clinical outcomes database with a large colorectal focus – I have relished discovering insights into the effects of multiple factors such as obesity and operative times on patient outcomes. I am interested in continuing this line of research, helping to further our understanding of what modifiable factors we as surgeons can change for us, our institutions, and in our patients that can improve our patient’s outcomes.
I also have experience with resident wellness and surgical education that allows me valuable insight and perspective in resident training. During my residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, I was a proponent for resident wellness and was instrumental in working with our administration to improve resident salaries and benefits and to institute a housing stipend to help cover the rising costs of living in Seattle. I was also the Resident Lead on the Robotic Resident Education Committee, tasked with establishing and updating the robotic surgery curriculum for general surgery residents. These experiences illustrate my commitment to the improvement and refinement of surgical education.
