Dr. Ohnuma obtained his M.D. from Yamagata University, Yamagata, Japan and received his clinical training in Department of Surgery, Tokyo Metropolitan Komagome Hospital and Tokyo Metropolitan Toshima Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. He also obtained his Ph.D. from Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, Sendai, Japan. In November 2010, after 3 years as a his postdoctoral training in Transport Biochemistry Section, Laboratory Cell Biology, Center for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute of Maryland, he joined the Department Surgery, Tohoku University Hospital, Sendai, Japan. In July 2020, he serves as Chief of Colorectal Surgery in the Department Surgery, Tohoku University Hospital.
