Marhama Zafar is a research associate working alongside The Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at University of Illinois, Chicago. Marhama graduated from The Aga Khan University, Pakistan with a degree in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2023 and started her research fellowship at UIC the same year. She developed her interest in colorectal surgery during her elective as a visiting medical student and she has a long term goal to pursue a career in surgery and provide care to the underserved population in the United States. She intends to dedicate two years to research fellowship to learn and develop research skills under the guidance of her mentors, Dr. Anders Mellgren and Dr. Gerald Gantt. Dr. Zafar believes that this opportunity would significantly aid in her development as a clinician and a researcher and she is committed to acquiring the expertise needed to answer important research questions regarding patient care.
